Introducing "Ode To The Gazelle Collection" by The Arabesque -
The inspiration for the design on this t-shirt comes from a lustreware plate made in 11th century Fatimid Cairo featuring a gazelle within an arabesque design. Fatimid ceramics exquisitely depicted scenes of nature and daily life. The gazelle was often a motif chosen by medieval Muslim artists because in Arabic literature this majestic animal was not only a treasured fauna of the desert but also represented beauty, grace and serenity. Women’s beauty was often directly compared to that of the gazelle. For instance, the 10th century poet al-Sanawbari (d. 945) writes in a verse written in praise of the beauty of the women of Raqqa:
We May Have Hunted Her Gazelles One Day
Her Gazelles Hunted Our Hearts Forever
A viewer of the original Fatimid plate in Cairo would have been reminded of the beauty and grace the gazelle represented within Islamic culture. We thought that we'd put a spin on this by putting this very interesting design on a t-shirt. You know you "slay it" when you walk around wearing a medieval Fatimid gazelle motif!
