An arabesque also describes the posture of a ballet dancer when they support their body on one leg while extending the other leg horizontally backward. Many of us could not do this without pulling a few muscles, but we can surely appreciate the art of dance and the inspiration dancers give the world with their movement and love for self-expression. Interestingly, a popular motif from medieval islamic art was the image of the dancing girl where she is often depicted kneeling towards one side with her other leg extended backwards. We wanted to bring that age old medieval motif to our t-shirt collection so we have a created a series of shirts which depict a 10th century Egyptian dancer from a ceramic bowl made by Fatimid artisans. The artist who originally painted her image can be applauded for trying to capture a sense of realism in his creation. As the dancer bends and extends her legs, the artist skillfully drew creases in the clothing of the dancer to depict what might have actually occurred when a dancer made such moves. On this t-shirt we created a stylized sketch of the original dancer to give her a modern makeover. Although her image is over a thousand years old, she still looks modern, elegant, and demonstrating the beauty of dance. She is dancing forever. Designed and sold exclusively by The Arabesque.
